{"id":48297,"date":"2023-08-21T14:24:15","date_gmt":"2023-08-21T19:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/?p=48297"},"modified":"2023-08-21T14:28:34","modified_gmt":"2023-08-21T19:28:34","slug":"incoming-students-symbolize-new-beginnings-at-convocation-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/21\/incoming-students-symbolize-new-beginnings-at-convocation-ceremony\/","title":{"rendered":"Incoming Students Symbolize New Beginnings at Convocation Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"padding: 56.25% 0 0 0;position: relative\"><iframe style=\"position: absolute;top: 0;left: 0;max-width: 100%;height: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/856477605?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Around 200 members of 91¿´Æ¬Íø&rsquo;s incoming student class wrapped up their 2023 Orientation Week activities and officially launched their higher education journeys at the university&rsquo;s annual Convocation ceremony, held August 20, 2023, in the Beaux Arts Ballroom.<\/p>\n<p>BSU&rsquo;s annual Convocation ceremony is meant to bookend a student&rsquo;s time in college, providing a ceremonial beginning to a journey which eventually ends at Commencement and the awarding of degrees. Faculty in regalia processed into the ballroom, joining students who heard welcome messages from Travis Greene, BSU&rsquo;s vice president for student life &amp; success, and John L. Hoffman, BSU and Northwest Technical College president.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks, Hoffman challenged students to take advantage of the myriad opportunities that life on a college campus can present to them and to identify and share their superpower &mdash; a special skill that each student can use to support others.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony concluded with a solemn candle-lighting ceremony. From a flame burning on stage, faculty and students used their candles to ignite candles held by their neighbors to symbolize the exchange of knowledge that will happen while they attend BSU.<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony featured a welcome song from Red Lake Nation, and Greene read and explained BSU&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bemidjistate.edu\/about\/land-acknowledgment\/\">Land
